In this hands-on lecture, students will explore the end of Austria-Hungary through two Czech family stories using oral history and primary sources. These include a Czech Legionnaire's WWI diary and the story of a military deserter who emigrated to America before volunteering for the Czech military in France during WWI. Together, these accounts illustrate how war, migration, and national identity shaped individual lives from the collapse of the empire to the creation of a new state.
