Center Austria at 25
It is hard to believe that Center Austria is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It is even harder to believe that the transatlantic partnership that I initiated in Austria between the Universities of New Orleans and Innsbruck has grown so many strong branches. Center Austria is one of the strongest.
It all began when I founded UNO’s International Summer School in 1976 at the University of Innsbruck. We brought 23 professors with 250 American students from UNO and some 40 universities across America to the “capital of the Alps.”
In 1983, the UNO Chancellor and Leopold-Franzens Rektor reached agreement to formalize our partnership. It committed both universities to provide financial support, organize graduate student and annual faculty exchanges, and the creation of research initiatives at both universities.
I could not be more proud to witness the extraordinary research and educational opportunities that are growing under the leadership of Center Austria. It is a legacy that is sure to grow stronger for the next 25 years.
