AYA Admission Requirements and Program Cost
The UNO - INNSBRUCK ACADEMIC YEAR ABROAD is open to undergraduates from all accredited colleges and universities who have at least sophmore ranking and are in good academic standing at their home institution. All students must be abide by regulations governing the program, and the sponsoring institutions reserve the right to require the withdrawal of any student whose personal or academic conduct warrants such action. Students may apply for the full academic year or for one semester only.
Language Requirements:
Students WITH German proficiency
Students with certified proficiency in German may choose the full immersion track. Verification from the Foreign Language or German Department Chair of Advanced or Advanced Intermediate standing, approved language course certificates such as those issued by the Goethe Institute, or a minumum of four semesters of college level German and successful completi on of the University of Innsbruck's language proficiency exam may exempt an applicant from the language study requirements expected from all other AYA participants.
Such students with German proficiency will be fully integrated into the Austrian University system and will be able to enroll in regularly offered courses at the University of Innsbruck, in addition to any AYA courses required. They will need to consult their Advisor, Department Chairs, and Dean at their home institution when selecting classes from the regular LFU course offerings. Arrangements for such students will be handled individually through UNO's Center Austria office in consultation with the Resident Director. This coordination will ensure that courses are accepted for transfer credit.
Students WITHOUT German proficiency
Preference will be given to applicants with prior knowledge of German, however, students with no prior knowledge of German may also apply. If accepted for the UNO - INNSBRUCK ACADEMIC YEAR ABROAD, students with little or no knowledge of German must enroll in an intensive German language program prior to registration in Innsbruck. Programs such as those offered by the Goethe Institutes in the U.S. and Germany, or by LFU itself, are recommended to prepare students for living and studying in German-speaking Austria.
Information on those programs will be provided upon request. Once in Innsbruck, students will continue their study of German each semester. In addition, students will enroll in a variety of "Special Topics" courses created especially for the Academic Year Abroad program. These courses are taught in English by an internationalfaculty and are open to regular LFU students.
