P R E S S R E L E A S E: TEN YEARS CENTER AUSTRIA

TEN YEARS CENTER AUSTRIA

As part of its Ten Year Anniversary celebration, CenterAustria is hosting lectures, conferences and concerts throughout the academic year of 2007/8.

The Center for Austrian Culture and Commerce was founded at the University of New Orleans in the Fall Semester of 1997. The originator of the UNO International Summer School in Innsbruck Dr. Gordon “Nick” Mueller also founded CenterAustria. It aims at coordinating all exchange programs and academic activities between UNO and its partner university in Innsbruck and other Austrian institutions.

CenterAustria has exchanged hundreds of students through programs such as the “Austrian Student Program” in New Orleans and the “Academic Year Abroad” in Innsbruck. Dozens of UNO and University of Innsbruck faculty members have taught at the partner institution. CenterAustria has  organized numerous lectures, conferences, concerts and art exhibits to deepen the appreciation of Austrian and European affairs at UNO, and in New Orleans and the Gulf South region. Given such a rich fabric of activities with the University and the city of Innsbruck, it is noteworthy that our Austrian friends were particularly generous in helping with the recovery of UNO faculty and staff and the city of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

As part of its Ten Year Anniversary celebration, CenterAustria is hosting lectures, conferences and concerts throughout the academic year of 2007/8

The culmination of our “Ten Year Anniversary Activities” will happen on February 7/8, 2008 with Dr. Erhard Busek, former Austrian Vice Chancellor and Coordinator of the Stability Pact for the Balkans, addressing a luncheon at the Plimsoll Club of the World Center on the topic of “Nation Building in the Balkans: Lessons Learned” on February 7 at noon.

On February 8 there will be a celebration in the afternoon with visiting Austrian dignitaries, among them Austrian Ambassador to the United States Eva Nowotny,  Andreas Stadler, the Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York, the new Rektor of the partner University of Innsbruck Karlheinz Töchterle, as well as the University of Innsbruck “special UNO ambassador” Franz Mathis. Philip Lorio, the Honorary Consul General of Austria in Louisiana and Mississippi, is helping with the arrangements for the Austrian dignitaries.
